Blaise Pascal was home educated by his father, Etienne Pascal (a mathematician himself), who made the radical decision to ban his son from studying maths until 15 years of age.
Most parents would want to use their existing expertise to give their child an advantage and head start.
Etienne Pascal saw this differently.
A later introduction
He centered Blaise’s education on other subjects such as languages, wanting him to stay focused on these studies before jumping into science and math.
It was during his teen years it was noticed that his curiosity had already led him to mathematical discoveries.
His father found him drawing geometric figures on the floor. Blaise had developed a technique for measuring angles on triangles. The ban was lifted (a year early).
Inventing the Pascaline
Years later, Blaise encountered the challenge that would inspire the invention of the first mechanical calculator.
Seeing his father spend hours calculating large scale sums for his tax work.
Here’s the part of his story where I found another answer to my ongoing inquiry,
“What produces great contributors?”
They don’t stop at following tutorials.
We make children spend 12+ years receiving an education wherein the highest achievement is passing the test. Being able to regurgitate what was handed to them.
The Pascaline didn’t come about from following a step by step guide.
It couldn’t have surfaced from Blaise solely seeking to master the best practices for handling large scale sums in his time.
A learning from his achievement
Blaise had to break the boundaries of what was already established in order to pioneer – applying his own thinking and vision for solving the problem at hand.
Risk, failure, and independence are hallmarks for deep learning that nurtures intelligence.
